CHURCH SAN SUDARIO

The original building in the quarter of Cavalleri dates back to the 15 th century and was dedicated to Saint Bernard from Menton. This ancient church underwent different enlargements during the 16 thand 17 th centuries.

Following the setting up of the Holy Shroud Brotherhood in 1521 (the first to be established in Italy, the second in Europe).

The apse, the presbytery and the bell tower date back to the 16 th century. Its elegant façade, enriched by pilasters and trabeations and the belfry belong to later times.

Many are the references to the Holy Shroud, which is reproduced in its frescos, paintings, sculptures and in the furniture.

Among its noticeable pieces of art we want to draw your attention to the repro inlaid altar by Pietro Solari from Como (1744), to the 18 th century wooden choir, to the organ (18 th-19 th century), to the apse painting representing the Holy Shroud (1791).
